Interactional Metadiscourse Markers in English Research Article Abstracts Written by Non-Native Authors: A Corpus-Based Contrastive Study

Abstracts in research articles play a crucial role settling the impact of academic articles. However, despite abundance on discourse, variation its linguistic features among scholars from different cultures seems to have remained untouched. This corpus linguistics study presents comparative analysis interactional metadiscourse markers 96 article abstracts written English by both Russian and Spanish field linguistics. The is based assumption that distribution devices produced each group scholars. because discourse has been influenced growing expansion Anglophone conventions larger extent. theoretical basis Hyland’s (2005) taxonomy markers, which offers pragmatically-grounded method for studying types such discourse. Findings revealed leave more traces themselves their writing take far explicitly involved positions than These findings carry pedagogical implications course designers instructors can enhance non-native writers’ knowledge culture-specific international discipline.
